Who we are?

In Esperanto, Sano means “health”. Thus, since the very beginning the Institute focus on interdisciplinarity and cooperation of all specialists in the field of broadly understood medicine, IT and technology. Everything to shape future healthcare with usage of computational personalized medicine. The strategic objectives of the Centre span five domains:

2023
In 2023 Sano acquired and started to work on two EU-funded projects:
- NearData (Horizon Europe programme, started in January 2023);
- GEMINI (Horizon Europe programme, started in December 2023).
At the end of 2023, a grant agreement awarded to Sano by the International Research Agendas Programme (IRAP) of the Foundation of Polish Science (FNP) came to an end. In December 2023, a new agreement was signed according to which Sano is co-financed by the Poland Government Budget Project “The operational support of the centres of excellence created under the Horizon 2020 programme”. (Wsparcie działalności centrów doskonałości utworzonych w ramach programu HORYZON 2020).
2022
In August 2022, Dr. Arkadiusz Sitek who had served as the director and the president of the management board resigned and Dr. Maciej Malawski was appointed as the director of Sano.
2020-2021
The registration court officially confirmed the act of establishment in September 2019, and in October 2019 Sano, led by Marian Bubak as President of the Management Board, began implementation of the IRAP FNP grant. In 2020, through an intensive recruitment process coordinated by Karolina Jarosińska, the Sano leadership team was established, and in early 2021 Arkadiusz Sitek was appointed the Director of Sano. Around that time, Sano officially joined the Teaming for Excellence Phase 2 project, and soon became the coordinator of the entire consortium for this 7-year action. In November 2021, Sano started to work on the InSilicoWorld project (an EU-funded project under the Horizon 2020 programme).
2019
This Phase 2 proposal was accepted by the European Commission in March 2019, and the core team coordinated the formal establishment of a new independent legal body called Sano. Following intensive negotiations among the five founding partners, FNP and NCBR, the Statute of the nascent institute was prepared, and subsequently, on July 17, 2019, five founders – Tadeusz Słomka, Kazimierz Wiatr, Kazimierz Murzyn, Marian Bubak, and Tomasz Gubała – signed the Act of Establishment of Sano with the legal form of a foundation.
2017-2018
In the years 2017-2018 they were joined by Jan Osiński from NCBR to coordinate a six-partner, 12-month preparatory project (CECM). During that time, together with collaborators from the University of Sheffield, Fraunhofer ISI, Research Centre Jülich and Klaster LifeScience Kraków, they won the prestigious International Research Agenda (IRAP) grant from the Foundation for Polish Science (FNP). With the assistance of Tomasz Michalczyk, a financial specialist, a long-term, multi-year development plan for the new centre was created, and in Autumn 2018 the consortium placed their bid in the Teaming for Excellence Phase 2 competition.
2016
The idea of establishing an independent institute for computational medicine in Kraków was first proposed by Tomasz Gubała and Marian Bubak in August 2016. Soon, together with their colleagues from Cyfronet – Piotr Nowakowski, Maciej Malawski and Jan Meizner – they put together an international consortium of six partners and successfully applied to EU’s Teaming for Excellence Phase 1 programme.

The main aim and challenge for modern medicine is to provide all patients with the best quality of life, and this can be achieved through personalized treatment. This approach not only provides better healing effects, but also fewer side effects. Equally important is the fact that thanks to individualized diagnostics and therapy, the costs associated with treatment are reduced, which in turn means that more people can receive treatment for the same money. The benefits of personalized healthcare are therefore extremely important in both developed and developing countrie.

Who – What – Why of Sano

Most organizations know who they are and what they do. Nevertheless only few of them know why they do what they do. In Sano we know what we do and how to do it on the highest level. We believe in computational medicine solutions and we enjoy our work. Based on that we define our mission and values.

Our passion is asking questions and seeking for unconventional answers.

The main object is creating and tailoring futurist ideas to medicine by using computational medicine. Multidisciplinarity of the projects and diverse perspectives are our strength. By respecting and valuing ethical standards, in particular good scientific practices, transparency, reproducibility of our research and knowledge dissemination, we are building strong connections between us, which empower one another to best work. Thus it become our mission to connect people, ideas and different pespectives no matter of age, ethnicity, or religion. That is why, we want to become one of the best Centre for computational medicine in Central Eastern Europe.
